Sources and acknowledgements
Postmark only exists because New Zealand libraries, museums and archives have chosen to share their photographs openly, and because players send in photos of the places they love. This page names them all with thanks, and explains how their rights are handled.
How the photos are licensed
Every photo in the game falls into one of two groups.
Public-domain photographs, such as New Zealand photographs taken before 1944, where copyright has expired.
Openly licensed photographs, mostly Creative Commons (CC BY). These remain under copyright. The licence permits reuse on the condition that the source is credited, which the game does after every round.
The game follows the licence each collection has chosen for its own material. We do not relabel an openly licensed image as public domain. After each round you can see the photo’s title, the holding collection, a link to the original record, and the licence it is shared under.
With thanks to
Postmark draws on photographs shared by these New Zealand collections, accessed largely through DigitalNZ. Naming them here is an acknowledgement of their work in preserving and sharing this material. It does not imply they endorse the game.

Aggregators and platforms
Many records are discovered through DigitalNZ, which brings together collections from across the motu, and through Wikimedia Commons, where contributors share openly licensed and public-domain images.
And the players
Some photos are sent in by people who play the game and want to share a corner of New Zealand they love. Thank you. If you would like to add one, share a photo.
Corrections and takedowns
We take rights and acknowledgement seriously and we are not perfect. If you represent a collection or own a photo and believe something is credited wrongly, licensed wrongly, or should not be used, please email hello@postmark.co.nz. We will look into it promptly and remove or correct anything that needs it.
